Uvesa Group, as part of the project ‘The Sense of Meat’, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of reducing food waste, as well as to highlight all the good practices in this area that the sector has been applying for some time now.

Tudela, 25th September 2024. Uvesa Group, as a member of ‘El Sentido de la Carne’, has joined AECOC’s Week against Food Waste. In this way, Uvesa Group seeks to raise awareness of the importance of reducing food waste, supporting the large number of activities and projects that AECOC will launch, aimed at enhancing the value of food and raising consumer awareness to win the battle against food waste. This edition will involve schools, academic centres, leading companies in the food distribution and industry, administrations and third sector organisations.

By joining AECOC’s Week against Food Waste, the Uvesa Group also wants to highlight the good practices that the meat sector has been applying in this area for some time now. In this respect, the initiative aims to highlight the fact that animal products generate very little food waste and the surplus is minimal. In Spain, this percentage is also very low, accounting for only 7.1% of total food waste.

This is highly relevant given that wasted food in the European Union generates 170 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, which is 17% of the EU’s direct greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, livestock farming drives a number of circular economy practices, contributing to the fight against food losses and food waste. One example of this is the use of many by-products of plant production intended for human use for livestock feed.  These by-products would go to landfill if they were not used as a basis for animal feed.

The meat industry also fights against food waste with research and R&D work to continuously improve product design, for example, formulations to increase the consumption and expiry date of food or the design of packaging that guarantees a longer shelf life for meat and processed products through improvements in storage, production and transport infrastructures, among others.
